Translate x/12 notation into an inclination angle
This focused converter starts with conventional roof pitch notation. Enter the numerator from x/12 and it returns the angle whose tangent is x divided by 12. It is useful for reading schedules, comparing standard pitch labels, or setting an angle-based tool from a stated design value.
The denominator 12 is horizontal run, not twelve degrees and not twelve units along the roof surface. For pitch x/12, θ=atan(x/12). Because arctangent is nonlinear, adding one inch of rise does not add the same number of degrees at every pitch.
Convert a stated x/12 pitch
- Find the pitch label on the drawing or specification and confirm that it uses rise over 12 horizontal units.
- Enter only the rise numerator—for 4/12 enter 4, and for 7.5/12 enter 7.5.
- Read degrees at the precision supported by the source. A whole-number pitch label usually does not justify many real-world decimal places.

Worked entries from common pitch labels
- For 4/12, atan(4÷12)=18.435°. Percent grade is 33.33%.
- For 9/12, atan(9÷12)=36.870°. Percent grade is 75%.
- For 12/12, rise equals run, so the angle is exactly 45° and grade is 100%.
- For 2.5/12, atan(2.5÷12)≈11.768°; decimal numerators are mathematically valid even when a trade convention uses fractions.
- A label using another denominator must be normalized before entry: 3/8 has the same ratio as 4.5/12.

- Add degree equivalents beside x/12 rows in a comparison table.
- Set a manual bevel or digital inclinometer from an authoritative pitch note.
- Explain why 100% grade corresponds to 45°, not 90°.

A schedule value describes design intent. A photo shows a projection, and a built surface may vary. Conversion is appropriate for translating the stated notation; checking construction requires suitable field methods.

Check the notation before converting
The form assumes rise per 12 horizontal units. Some documents use ratios, percentages, degrees, or regional conventions instead. A correct conversion of a misunderstood label is still the wrong answer, and the number says nothing about roof condition or structural adequacy.
